Writing a handful of songs that became jazz standards, his unorthodox style featured dissonances and a percussive way of piano playing. Monk was seen as a sharply dressed, mysterious genius by peers and critics. Starting his career in New York’s bebop scene of the 1940’s, his talent wasn’t widely recognized until the release of his masterpiece album “Brilliant Corners” in 1956, celebrating his career high in the 1960s. He disappeared from the public eye in the mid-1970s due to health deterioration.
